FORT KNOX, Ky. — More than 20 Soldiers, civilians and family members attended an inaugural Fort Knox career exploration & hiring event held in Palma Hall Dec. 14 in search of jobs.

During the morning session of the Hiring Our Heroes event, sponsored by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation and hosted by the Transition Assistance Program, many of the job seekers attended briefings and a panel discussion on ways to search for and land a career path. At the same time, nearly a dozen corporate recruiters were busy setting up tables in an adjoining room in anticipation of meeting them.

The morning sessions and career exploration workshops included a panel discussion with three people who have a direct link to veterans and the military culture. Each panel member provided a unique perspective on how to channel military experience in ways that appeal to corporate bosses.

One of the sessions, led by Hiring Out Heroes director of Events & Engagements Crystal Bryant-Kearns, focused on the use of the social media platform LinkedIn as a way for those exiting the military to get recruiters’ attention to their job skills.

“About 85% of companies recruit only through LinkedIn,” said Bryant-Kearns. “This is not Facebook; keep it professional.”

After the briefings, the job seekers met with the recruiters to present their resumes and discuss possible leads for future employment in over 1,500 open positions. Transition service manager Andrew Cooper said they are planning another event in 2023.
