Get in the ‘spooky spirit’ with Fort Leonard Wood’s Halloween events

FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. — The leaves are changing; the weather is getting cooler; and spider webs and jack-o’-lanterns are taking over people’s yards and porches.

Halloween is getting closer, and Fort Leonard Wood has several events planned to get the whole family in the “spooky spirit.”

The Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation is excited to offer a variety of events this year, said FMWR Marketing Manager Nia Dickinson.

“We’ve got something for all ages,” she said. “We look forward to seeing the community out and about enjoying these events, spending time together and making new friends.”

The FMWR events include:

  • Spooky Movie Series, 4 p.m. Oct. 18 to 20, Oct. 25 and Oct. 27 at the Bruce C. Clarke Library. PG rated movies will be shown in the Children’s Room, and PG-13 rated movies will be shown in the Community Room. All ages are welcome, but children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Call the library at 573.563.4113 for movie titles. This event is free of charge.
  • Zombie Paintball, 3 to 6 p.m. Oct. 21 at the Outdoor Adventure Center. The event is open to ages 15 and up. Cost is $45 per person and includes equipment rental, 500 paintballs, and a commemorative t-shirt. Register here.
  • Pumpkin Hunting Archery Competition, 2 to 5 p.m. Oct. 22 at the OAC. The event is open to ages 10 and older. Cost is $25 per person. Register online here or in person at the OAC by Oct. 20. Call 573.596.4223 for more information.
  • BOSS Haunted House, 7 to 9:30 p.m. Oct. 21 and 22, and Oct. 28 and 29 at Bldg. 709. This event is open to anyone with access to Fort Leonard Wood and is appropriate for ages 10 and up. Cost is $2 per person. All proceeds go to the Fort Leonard Wood Better Opportunities for Single Service members program.
  • Pumpkin Decorating Contest, Oct. 18 to 26 at the Bruce C. Clarke Library. The library will begin accepting submissions at their circulation desk Oct. 18 and the winner will be announced during the StoryWalk on Oct. 26. The contest is open to all ages. Pumpkins must be painted; carved pumpkins will not be accepted. There is no charge to participate.
  • Halloween StoryWalk, 3 to 5:30 p.m. Oct. 26 at the Bruce C. Clarke Library. Children can put on their costumes and take a walk in front of the library while reading the book “How to Scare a Ghost” by Jean Reagan. The walk will be directly followed by an indoor trick-or-treat event and a costume contest at 4:30 p.m. This event is free of charge.
  • National Pumpkin Day Coloring Contest, Oct. 26. Print out the coloring page found here and post it to the FMWR Facebook page to be entered to win. The winner will be chosen on Oct. 26. This event is free of charge.
  • X-tremely Spooktacular Bowling, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Oct. 29 at Daugherty Bowling Center. Go in costume and have the chance to win prizes. Cost is $2 per game. Price does not include shoe rental, which is $3.
  • Spooktacular Dodgeball, 9 a.m. Oct. 29 at Davidson Fitness Center. Dress up in a costume to win a prize. Open to ages 18 and older. Cost is $20 per four-person team. Register at DFC or by calling 573.596.4359 by Oct. 26.

Besides FMWR’s events, the U.S. Army Garrison Fort Leonard Wood Trunk-or-Treat event occurs from 4 to 6 p.m. Oct. 28 at the Main Exchange, and will include games, trunk-or-treating and music by the 399th Army Band Rock Band “The Roughriders.” All ages are welcome. This event is free of charge.

Additionally, trick-or-treating in Fort Leonard Wood’s housing areas is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 31, and General Leonard Wood Army Community Hospital is hosting candy X-ray from 6 to 10 p.m. Oct. 31 in the Radiology Department.
