ROCK ISLAND ARSENAL, Ill. – Milford L. Sexton, Jr., an Information Technology Specialist for the U.S. Army Sustainment Command, received the 2021 Louis Dellamonica Award for Outstanding U.S. Army Materiel Command Personnel of the Year. He is one of just 10 AMC employees to receive the award.
He was selected from across the AMC enterprise, which spans all 50 states and more than 150 countries and is comprised of more than 175,000 employees.
“I was truly honored and humbled to hear that I was selected for this highly esteemed award,” Sexton said. “I always strive to ‘aim high’ and do my very best in supporting the U.S. Army's mission.
“I was a little overwhelmed since I only had two days of notice to make arrangements to travel to Redstone Arsenal to accept the award,” he added. “It was a whirlwind trip.”
Sexton currently works at the Joint Personal Property Shipping Office Northwest, Support Operations Directorate, at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington. According to his nomination packet, he exceeded expectations, completing multiple initiatives within the Army Personal Property community in 2021.
“I currently manage and administer the Department of Defense Cybersecurity and Information Awareness Program as well as the Information Systems Management Program for JPPSO-NW,” Sexton said.
He is also responsible for the planning, installation, and maintenance of new information technology systems, and collaborates with the director and deputy director at JPPSO-NW and HQ ASC/G-8 Resource Management on annual IT budget requirements to meet established Army standards.
Sexton has 38 years of combined military, contracting and Civilian service.
Born in Owensboro, Kentucky, he joined the U.S. Air Force in 1981 after graduating from high school with honors.
He started his enlistment as a staff support specialist and later became an IT workgroup manager, beginning his long and prestigious career in the IT career field.
After retiring from the Air Force in 2001, he worked as an Army contractor at the JBLM Network Operations Center, previously known as the 1115th Signal Battalion, from May 2004 to April 2008.
“My Department of the Army Civilian career started in 2008, when I got hired as the Information Systems and Cybersecurity Manager at my current location,” Sexton said.
He was selected to receive the Dellamonica Award for his leadership skills and exceptional performance.
In 2021, Sexton took initiatives that helped the Army personal property community go “from the industrial age to the digital age,” his nomination reads, “establishing a virtual cloud-based call center application and modernizing how Soldiers and Civilians communicate with personal property managers through phone, digital mail, and chat functionality.”
Sexton and the other award recipients were recognized during a ceremony held Sept. 22 at AMC headquarters at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama, and presided by Gen. Ed Daly, AMC commanding general.
“I want to accentuate the importance and value of this award,” Daly said. “This is a highly prestigious award and the individuals who receive it have demonstrated how important they are to our Army.”
The Dellamonica Award recognizes Civilian and military members from across AMC for their innovation, leadership, and dedication to the mission. The selectees usually have a history of outstanding service and accomplishments that significantly contribute to AMC's mission, goals and objectives.
The award was named after Louis Dellamonica, a general engineer at AMC's Hawthorne Army Depot in Nevada. He retired at the age of 94 in 2007, with more than 65 years of government service, as both the oldest and longest-serving Department of Defense employee.
