SCHOFIELD BARRACKS, Hawaii (July 28, 2022) — Military and community members alike gathered here for a special ceremony, today, as U.S. Army Garrison Hawaii’s top leader relinquished his command to the new commander, who will lead the garrison for the next two years.

Col. Dan Misigoy passed the coveted unit colors of Hawaii’s second largest “city” to Col. Steve McGunegle on Weyand Field earlier this afternoon, with dozens of military leaders and Soldiers, community members, elected officials and friends of the Army in attendance.

Mr. Craig Deatrick, Installation management Command-Pacific Regional Director thanked Misigoy for his leadership over the past 24 months, and welcomed McGunegle and his family to the Army base in Wahiawa.

“Col. Misigoy’s genuine care for the welfare for the two garrison teams, here and at Pohakuloa on Hawaii Island, and the Army communities is a testament to his servant leadership approach to the vast responsibilities that he faced every day,” said Deatrick.

Misigoy’s two years at the garrison have been highlighted by a passion and drive to resolve the most complex of issues and crises to include housing and barracks renovations, infrastructure advancements, commitment to the management of natural and cultural resources, Army training land retention projects, and certainly enhancing the quality of life for Soldiers and families here.

His entire tenure navigated not only through the COVID-19 pandemic, but also the response to the water contamination events at Aliamanu Military Reservation and Red Hill housing area.

Misigoy’s leadership has been instrumental in safeguarding the community’s health and maintaining open lines of communication with all audiences.

“We are not doing this alone, and the installation team of teams is strong. I want you all to know you all are a critical part of our success and I am eternally grateful to each and every one of you,” Misigoy said, commenting to the U.S. Army Garrison workforce.

Misigoy also ensured his communication with Soldiers and families was consistent and across numerous platforms including regular live-streamed updates on Facebook, in-person town halls, and community information exchanges. His next assignment is with the 8th Theater Sustainment Command at Fort Shafter.

As the incoming garrison commander, McGunegle will lead and support more than 95,000 Soldiers, families, retirees and civilian employees on the islands of Oahu and Hawaii. Similar to a city manager, he will be responsible for managing operations and services across 22 Army installations, including Schofield Barracks, Fort Shafter, Wheeler Army Airfield, Tripler Army Medical Center, Fort DeRussy and others.

“Garrisons are called the Army’s home, and they provide the foundation by which we build strength and resilience. The Hawaii garrison team is an outstanding team, and will continue to provide facilities and services to accomplish the mission,” McGunegle said.

McGunegle’s previous assignment was with the Defense Intelligence Agency based in Washington D.C. He is married to Col. Margaret McGunegle, commander of the 130th Engineer Brigade at Schofield Barracks, and they have two children.
