Fiscal 2021 Army safety award winners announced

FORT RUCKER, Alabama ─ The U.S. Army Combat Readiness Center (USACRC) recently named the winners of the fiscal 2021 Secretary of the Army and Chief of Staff annual Army safety awards.

"The accomplishments of these winners reinforces the importance of proactive risk management both on and off duty," said Brig. Gen. Gene Meredith, director of Army Safety and commanding general of the USACRC. "Managing loss prevention is central to Army readiness by protecting its finite resources. We thank everyone for their hard work – they can be justifiably proud of this significant accomplishment."

To be considered for an award, individuals and organizations must have made significant improvements and contributions to mishap prevention, among other criteria, during the previous fiscal year, according to Army Regulation 385-10, The Army Safety Program, and Department of the Army Pamphlet 385-10, Army Safety Program.

Out of 53 total nominations received, 17 winners were selected by an awards review board. Awardees are as follows:

·      Army Exceptional Organization Safety Award - ACOM/ASCC/4-Star Commands: U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command

·      Army Exceptional Organization Safety Award - ASCC/DRU/FORSCOM 3-Star Commands: 18th Airborne Corps, U.S. Army Forces Command

·      Army Exceptional Organization Safety Award - ASCC/DRU 2-Star Commands: U.S. Army Tank-automotive and Armaments Command, U.S. Army Materiel Command

·      Army Exceptional Organization Safety Award - Army Divisions and all other 2-Star Commands: 416th Theater Engineer Command, U.S. Army Forces Command

·      Army Exceptional Organization Safety Award - DRU and 1-Star Commands: 9th Mission Support Command, U.S. Army Pacific Command

·      Army Exceptional Organization Safety Award - Brigade/Equivalent: Combat Capabilities Development Command Armaments Center, U.S. Army Futures Command

·      Army Exceptional Organization Safety Award - Battalion/Equivalent: 169th Engineer Battalion, U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command

·      Army Exceptional Organization Safety Award - Garrison: U.S. Army Garrison - Fort Riley, U.S. Army Materiel Command

·      Army Individual Award of Excellence in Safety - Field Grade Commissioned Officer: Maj. Jason A. Overstreet, U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command

·      Army Individual Award of Excellence in Safety - Company Grade Commissioned Officer: 1st Lt. Jessica R. Hindman, U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command

·      Army Individual Award of Excellence in Safety - Warrant Officer: Chief Warrant Officer 3 Brian M. Lazzara, U.S. Army Forces Command

·      Army Individual Award of Excellence in Safety - Noncommissioned Officer E5-E9: Sergeant First Class Xavier Bush, U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command

·      Army Individual Award of Excellence in Safety - Junior Enlisted E1-E4: Specialist Alexander Cortez, U.S. Army Forces Command

·      Army Individual Award of Excellence in Safety - Senior Level Department of the Army Civilian GS13-GS15: Mr. Wallace P. Edwards, U.S. Army Materiel Command

·      Army Individual Award of Excellence in Safety - Junior Level Department of the Army Civilian GS9-GS12: Mr. Brian G. Russell, U.S. Army Forces Command

·      Industrial Operations Safety Award: Major Maintenance Unit, Tulsa District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers

·      Army Excellence in Explosives Safety Award: U.S. Army Maneuver Support Center of Excellence, Fort Leonard Wood, U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command

In a joint message to the list of winners of the FY21 Army Awards of Excellence in Safety, Christine Wormuth, Secretary of the Army and Gen. James McConville, Army Chief of Staff, congratulated this year's winners saying, "The accomplishments of these winners reinforces the importance of proactive risk management integrated throughout our plans, operations and training. Effective loss prevention is central to Army readiness and is especially important in light of force reductions and resource challenges. Thank you for your hard work and accident prevention efforts. You can be justifiably proud of this significant accomplishment."

The Army Safety Awards Program is designed to recognize, promote and motivate success in mishap prevention through risk management by recognizing safety accomplishments of individuals and organizations in the field. It features positive measurements of current Army goals, improved plaques and certificates and a streamlined submission processes. The program also allows organizations to develop additional awards tailored to their unique mishap prevention and risk management goals.
