Fort Knox chaplains, Soldiers, civilians gather to raise voices during 2022 National Day of Prayer

FORT KNOX, Ky. — Soldiers, chaplains and civilian employees gathered in Fort Knox’s Cavalry Chapel May 5 to raise voices and hands in worship and intercession during this year’s National Day of Prayer.
Led by Chaplain (Col.) Charles Hamlin, Fort Knox Garrison chaplain, the group attended the non-denominational event, which focused on prayed for the nation, military, families, education and leaders.
“Today is our National Day of Prayer. Sometimes, it’s a time to reflect on who we are as citizens, and what we’re doing,” said Hamlin. “Jesus gave us some pretty good insight and guidance on how to be good citizens.”

Hamlin read from Luke 3:10-14 and explained that several different groups of people approached Jesus, wanting to know what they needed to do to follow Him. In each case, Jesus directed them to service that would lead to them being good citizens of the Kingdom of God.
Several chaplains participated in the 30-minute event, reading passages of scripture, then directing participants to join them in specific prayer. One of those in attendance was Hamlin’s son, Chaplain (1st Lt.) Luke Hamlin. The younger Hamlin led the prayer for leaders.
“Thank You for the men and women who serve our country in leadership roles, and for their families,” prayed Luke Hamlin. “God, grant our leaders at every level wisdom and courage as they diligently and thoughtfully make difficult decisions each day.”
After the prayer service, the elder Hamlin said prayer is extremely important in the military.
“Prayer is taking before God our deepest desires, our needs, and asking Him to grant those needs in accordance with His perfect will,” said Hamlin. “It’s so important that we realize that this world is not just one-and-done — that we’re just not here for 60, 80 years — but there’s a God.
“We serve God, and we take before God in prayer those needs and those desires of our heart, especially for our country; especially for our leaders.”
