ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND, Md. — Dr. Raj Iyer, the Department of the Army chief information officer (CIO), visited APG, Jan. 21. The U.S. Army Communications-Electronics Command’s (CECOM) Software Engineering Center (SEC) along with the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command (DEVCOM) Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Cyber, Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance (C5ISR) Center, hosted the first iteration of the visit which was an opportunity for Iyer and CECOM leadership to discuss modernization strategy, funding support and readiness, amongst other communication-technology related topics.
Iyer, formerly of U.S. Army Materiel Command (AMC), took on the role of CIO, charged with running the Army’s information systems with a business sense, by assisting the Army in spending money wisely and on the right equipment. Iyer is the first ever civilian CIO to serve the U.S. Army. During the visit, CECOM Commanding General, and APG Senior Commander, Maj. Gen. Robert Edmonson II, along with SEC Director, Jennifer Swanson, represented CECOM senior leadership and took advantage of the unique chance to directly voice any challenges or concerns of CECOM related programs and initiatives to the office of the Secretary of the Army.
