Tunnel to Towers Run/Walk

The Firefighter Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Run/Walk will kick off 9:30 a.m., Sept. 27. This year marks the seventh-annual running of this event.

On the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, Stephen Siller was on his way to play golf with his three older brothers when he heard the call on his scanner that a plane had hit one of the World Trade Center towers. Stephen turned his truck around and drove toward the mouth of the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, which was blocked by abandoned vehicles. Unable to drive anymore, Siller donned 75 pounds of fire gear and ran the mile and a half through the Tunnel. He reached the second Tower just minutes before it collapsed.

Faced with the tragic death of their younger brother, his six brothers and sisters were faced with a choice: let Stephen's death ruin their own lives, or use it as a catalyst to help others and preserve his memory. They chose the latter. The older siblings who had raised Stephen are continuing their legacy of love by their annual Tunnel to Towers Run, which follows the route Stephen took through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to get to the World Trade Center on that fateful day.

Registration is free for all active-duty service members, and service members participating in uniform. Visit www.tunneltotowersrun.org for details. Fort more information, contact John Hodge, (718) 987-1931 or hodgepodge@att.net.
