FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. — Late fall and winter months bring several holidays and opportunities for us to spend time with our loved ones near and far. Unfortunately, this time of year is traditionally the most dangerous on the roads. Hundreds of people die nationwide from driving-related accidents due to weather, wildlife or breaking laws associated with speed, seat belts or driving under the influence. This year, in the state of Missouri, 49 percent of roadway fatalities involved alcohol and 67 percent were not using seatbelts.
During the month of December, National Impaired Driving Prevention Month, let us talk to our teams about high-risk behaviors that can cause preventable driving accidents.
Decisions made while driving under the influence of alcohol, or any other controlled substance, can have far-reaching consequences. These poor decisions can negatively affect individual, family and unit readiness, along with the overall safety, health and welfare of others.
Driving distracted — whether by fatigue, using a phone, texting or other activities that take attention away from the task of driving — has similar consequences as driving impaired.
Winter weather can add additional risk to travel. Make sure you check for inclement weather, stock food and clothing for emergencies, and ensure that you have adequate fuel in case of a traffic delay. Inspect vehicles prior to every departure. Abide by all laws and safety guidelines. Always wear seatbelts and ensure those within your care do the same.
Leaders, please make sure your teammates have a plan to travel safely. Advise them to avoid driving on Christmas and New Year’s Eve if possible. Talk to those in your care and remind them that driving while under the influence, while distracted or in conflict with laws has no place in our formations or with our families. Encourage every person in your care to be good teammates and always help battle buddies who need safe transportation.
Drive carefully — we need you all safe this month and every month in order to accomplish our missions here at Fort Leonard Wood.
