SMDC financial team named one of the best

REDSTONE ARSENAL, Alabama – One “mighty” U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command team is ensuring U.S. taxpayers know they are soaring to resourcing excellence for the warfighter and the nation.

USASMDC G-8 team members were finally awarded their 2019 Assistant Secretary of the Army for Financial Management and Comptroller awards. These Army-level awards, delayed because of COVID-19, were presented to Erica Ignont, USASMDC deputy G-8, and Charlotte Berry, financial specialist, Resource Management, Audit, Systems and Policy Division, with USASMDC’s G-8.

Berry received the 2019 FM&C individual Audit Readiness Individual Award. Ignont, received the 2019 FM&C Best Execution Budget Division award on behalf of her team. The team members included Jessica Grubbs, Shanda Robinson, Jeanetta Burwell, Wayne Bracy, Caitlyn Glynn, Alisha Johnson, Casey Perkins, Greta Wiley and Ernest McGlamry.

Ignont was also named the 2020 ASA FM Education and Training Career Development Award winner.

“I was unbelievably surprised. It is always an honor to be recognized, but to receive recognition for my investment in education, training, and career development within the Mighty SMDC G-8 team means the world to me,” Ignont said. “Growing and impacting people is the gift that keeps on giving. I am deeply honored to be recognized at a national level. It is an honor to know that a group of my comptroller peers recognized the contributions I am personally making with the support of the team to train and empower members of the financial management career field.”

“It is a huge honor to represent SMDC for the Army,” she continued. “The support that SMDC gives to the Army may not be the most glamorous; however, it is extremely important. I have a great deal of pride being a part of this organization and knowing we are making critical contributions to our nation’s safety.

"I am extremely proud to be part of the mighty SMDC G-8 execution team,” Ignont said. “This team is so deserving of this award and they represent the command and the Army very well. In my opinion, they are the best team ever, and they work very hard to ensure the command’s missions are met. In the midst of an extremely challenging fiscal year and being significantly understaffed, they were able to get the impossible accomplished. I personally cannot think of a better group of people to work alongside.”

Berry said she was grateful for the recognition for herself, her team members and the command’s role in supporting the nation’s warfighters.

“I was honored that my efforts were being recognized by command leadership and the Army,” Berry said. “It was a total team effort. I have great coworkers and leadership, and this award would not have been possible without their support.

“SMDC plays a key role in the defense of our nation, as well as the support of our military,” she added. “It is an honor to be able to represent the organization at this level.”

Col. Samuel B. Glover II, SMDC G-8, said Ignont and Berry are a great Army example for their dedication to the command’s unique space and missile defense mission supporting warfighters around the world.

“We very proud of the Ms. Ignont, Ms. Berry and RME team for their efforts, and grateful to have such talent people in our organization and this award to very deserving of their numerous contribution give daily by both them and all of the mighty SMDC G-8 team,” Glover said. “This is a very humble honor the mighty SMDC G-8 family and it highlights the ‘Benchmark of Excellence’ we strive for daily within the organization to be the best financial management processional in the Army and Department of Defense.
