FORT CARSON, Colo. — Gen. James C. McConville, the 40th chief of staff of the Army, visited Fort Carson to meet with 4th Infantry Division and Fort Carson’s leaders and Soldiers, April 21, 2021, at Fort Carson, Colorado.

“Ivy” Soldiers were given a rare opportunity to engage with the Army’s highest leader, allowing them to receive guidance and wisdom, as well as discuss their own personal views and experiences within the organization.

McConville’s visit was eventful as he facilitated listening sessions with leaders around the installation, discussed on-post housing with Fort Carson Soldiers and Families, ate with key leaders and Soldiers, had open dialogue with the battalion command teams at McMahon Auditorium and promoted two Soldiers in the division headquarters atrium.

“For me to have the ability to be promoted by the chief of staff of the Army is an honor and privilege,” said Spc. Cody Spangler, 4th Brigade Support Battalion, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 4th Inf. Div. “I will always look back on this moment as a highlight in my career.”

McConville also promoted Spc. Christian A. Martindale, 2nd Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 1st SBCT.

During open dialogue, McConville spoke about various topics: the Army’s focus on readiness and building effective small-unit teams.

“We want to build cohesive teams that are highly trained, disciplined and fit — who are ready to fight and win,” said McConville.

The senior leader also spoke about the prevention of sexual assault, sexual harassment, racism, extremism and suicide within the ranks.

“These are behaviors that harm Soldiers and break trust with the American people,” he said disquietingly. “American citizens send us their sons and daughters to fight and defend our nation – not to fall victim from their fellow Soldiers.”

He closed the discussion touching on the Army’s multi-domain transformation that is set to be implemented throughout the decade. The transformation highlights different strategies with an encapsulated focus on Army vision, Army modernization and Army people.

McConville, prior to his departure from the installation, left a positive message for those on Fort Carson.

“I am very proud of the Soldiers, Families and civilians here at Fort Carson, the Mountain Post,” said McConville. “As I talk to the Soldiers and leaders today, what I really wanted to pass on to them is what a great job they’re doing … this post, this command, continues to train and provide trained and ready forces for global operations around the world.”
