JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. –  After a one-year hiatus due to COVID-19 restrictions, intramural sports, youth sports and the Commander’s Cup competition are scheduled to return this spring to Joint Base Lewis-McChord's Morale, Welfare and Recreation facilities.

Registration for intramural sports is now open to community members with access to JBLM. This year, available sports include tennis, disc golf, basketball, flag football, volleyball, soccer and softball.

For younger sport enthusiasts, the Youth Sports and Fitness Program, offered by Child and Youth Services, is open to kids ranging from 3 to 18 years of age. The youth programs host recreational leagues that are inclusive of all youth who want to lean the fundamentals of the game and have fun.

“We’re committed to safely adapting our programs to the COVID environment,” said Kellie Jorgensen, JBLM MWR deputy director of sports, fitness and aquatics. “We want service members and their families to stay safe, stay active and have fun.”

In order to keep players and spectators safe, MWR and CYS staff have established new COVID-safe measures.

Before every practice and game, temperature screenings will be conducted and masks must be worn by coaches, staff, players and spectators. No more than two spectators per child are allowed at practices or games and social distancing is required for all spectators. Also, equipment sanitation stations will be available as needed.

“Staying active is a great way to boost morale and community engagement,” said Bruce Antonowicz, JBLM MWR director of sports, fitness and aquatics. “With these new precautions, we hope to offer activities that are both fun and COVID safe for our JBLM community.”

For service members and units looking for more of a challenge, the Commander's Cup leagues are open to active-duty service members assigned to JBLM.

Commander’s Cup events will be announced during the year and points are earned for participation while additional placement points are awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. At the conclusion of the calendar year, the team who accumulated the most points for the year will receive the Commanders Cup trophy along with bragging rights for being the best team at JBLM.

“The Commander’s Cup offers service members a great outlet for healthy competition and comradery,” Antonowicz said. “There is usually some exciting rivalry involved and the league events offer great ways for service members to stay active outside of their day-to-day jobs.”
