Conversion Information

Internships are designed to provide students with opportunities to work and explore Federal careers while still in school and receiving a salary. Student interns work part-time or full-time schedules depending on school commitments and take periods of leave without pay when they are attending school full-time and unable to work. They may participate in temporary duty travel when it doesn’t interfere with their school schedule. Student interns serve a trial period (equivalent to probation) for the duration of their internship. Once the requirements of the program are met, students may be converted to a competitive service appointment.

Program conversion requirements

Upon successful completion of the program, students are eligible for noncompetitive conversion to a permanent Auditor position within 120-days of successful completion of their academic program with noncompetitive yearly promotion potential to the GS-12 grade level. To be eligible for conversion, interns must:

  • Complete their degree or certificate requirements.
  • Meet the qualification standards for the position to which the intern will be converted.
  • Meet agency-specific requirements as specified in the Participant’s Agreement.
  • Perform their job successfully.
  • Meet Agency requirements: (1) Annual travel up to 30% upon conversion to a permanent, full-time position; (2) Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret Security Clearance upon conversion

The grade level to which an intern converts is dependent upon the degree obtained and/or grade point average:

  • GS-05: Bachelor’s degree
  • GS-07: Bachelor’s degree with a GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • GS-09: Master’s degree.
