Col. Jeremy A. Bartel is a native of Glasgow, Montana. He commissioned from Kemper Military College in 1995 as an Engineer Officer and completed his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Missouri - Columbia. His initial assignment was with the 9th Engineer Battalion, 1st Infantry Division at Schweinfurt, Germany, where he served as a Combat Engineer Platoon Leader and Company Executive Officer while deployed to Kosovo in support of OPERATION JOINT GUARDIAN.

Following completion of the Infantry Advanced Course and the Special Forces Qualification Course, he was assigned to the 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne) in Okinawa. He served for three years as a Special Forces Detachment Commander and one year as the Assistant Battalion Operations Officer, which included deployments in support of OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM-Philippines, and training exercises with defense forces from Korea, India, Thailand, the Philippines and Australia.

In 2006, Col. Bartel attended the Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey, California, earning his Master of Science in Defense Analysis and subsequently returned to 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne) at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington, where he commanded a Special Forces Company and deployed to Mosul, Iraq in support of OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM. He additionally served as the 3rd Battalion Operations Officer, and the Group Operations Officer.

In 2011, Col. Bartel was assigned to Special Operations Command - Europe in Stuttgart, Germany. During this assignment, Col. Bartel deployed in support of OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM-Afghanistan with Combined Special Operations Task Force-10, and served in several positions with the Operations Directorate.

From 2014 to 2016, Col. Bartel commanded HHBN, 2nd Infantry Division at Camp Red Cloud, Korea. Following command, he was selected as an Army War College Fellow and spent one year in Herziliya, Israel at the Institute for Counter-Terrorism within the Lauder School of Government, Diplomacy and Strategy.

In 2017, Col. Bartel was reassigned to Special Operations Command - Europe, where he ultimately served as the Director of Operations until his departure for U.S. Army Garrison - Kwajalein Atoll.

Col. Bartel is married to the former Regan Murphy of Vincennes, Indiana. Their son, Jarek, is a junior in the Electrical Engineering program at Boston University, and their daughter, Mara, is a freshman at the University of Massachusetts - Boston.
