GRAFENWOEHR, Germany -- The U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria Family Advocacy Program is working hard to provide a vital service and create new programs for the community.
"Family Advocacy Program offers preventive-based services, not to be confused with the FAP Clinical team who works with law enforcement to provide assessments and treatments related to family violence," said Danell Leigh-Triola, family advocacy program specialist with USAG Bavaria Army Community Service.
The Family Advocacy Program is designated to address domestic abuse, child abuse and neglect, and behavior deemed problematic in children and youth.
"Per Army Regulation 608-18 , chapter 3-2, the Family Advocacy Program at Army Community Service is responsible for coordinating prevention programs related to community awareness, commander and troop education, parent support and education, victim services for child-on-child offenses, and spouse abuse," said Leigh-Triola.
USAG Bavaria also has specific guidance for the community in support of FAP.
"The FAP team works diligently to gather data and input from the community to determine what specific classes are needed to serve military personnel and their families. FAP is currently working to develop a needs assessment that can be distributed throughout the Garrison so that the community can share thoughts about how the Family Advocacy Program can better support families and Soldiers," said Leigh-Triola.
The programs emphasize the importance of the overall well-being of the family and provide preventative measures to assist families.
"The Family Advocacy Program focuses on increasing wellness and resiliency in military families by decreasing family violence via primary and secondary prevention steps. Our prevention focuses on areas where the family has already experienced success," said Leigh-Triola. "Helping families from a strength-based model means that FAP provides education and training to enhance skills families already have like building partnerships, communicating and parenting."
The FAP offers many programs and services such as the New Parent Support Program, the Victim Advocacy and Support Program, and treatment, counseling and rehabilitation for the community.
"Trained FAP victim advocates and clinicians offer a variety of services and programs, including workshops to build skills for healthy relationships, help in planning for safety in a crisis, as well as support to new and expecting parents," said Leigh-Triola.
The FAP also works directly with the U.S. Department of Defense Education Activity to promote child and youth safety through the implementation of supervision guidelines on Army in Europe installations.
Army Europe Regulation 608-18-1 has specific Child and Youth Supervision guidance for U.S. military and civilian personnel assigned to any element of the Army in Europe and defines inadequate supervision or neglect.
Family Advocacy Program services are available at every military installation where families are assigned.
