Labor Day weekend marks the end of summer and allows us to take a well-deserved break, relax and recharge. Historically, this holiday is also associated with increased mishaps requiring us to place a greater emphasis on managing risk.

Sound judgment must extend to everything we do. I expect everyone to act professionally, use the buddy system, display self-discipline and professionalism at all times. It is imperative that everyone acts responsibly in order to prevent sexual assaults and the misuse of alcohol. We continue to have problems with impaired driving off the installation. All must exercise sound judgment and realize we are only one decision away from making a life-changing or fatal mistake.

Prior to this holiday weekend, I expect leaders to talk to their subordinates about their activities and review safe practices for otherwise "routine" events such as swimming, hiking, barbequing and other outdoor activities. We must remain vigilant and ensure our risk management practices are in place. Risk management is a leader responsibility. However, never forget we have a shared responsibility to look out for one another.

As we transition into the fall season here in the Republic of Korea, expect unusually hot weather to continue for the next several weeks. Wherever your activities take you, remember to remain hydrated. Thank you for your selfless service and tireless support of our Eighth Army mission. Have a great holiday!
