FORT A.P. HILL, Virginia - Fort A.P. Hill officially reopened its Recreational Vehicle Park May 3, culminating a two and one-half year, $700,000 renovation.

The new facility has 30 paved parking spots complete with water, sewer and electrical hook-ups as well as campers for rent.

The RV Park Service Building also received a facelift and features brand-new male and female bathrooms with showers, coin-operated washers and dryers, free Wi-Fi and lounge furniture on which to relax.

The service building also has work tables and extra power outlets should someone want to plug in their computer or electronic device to use the Wi-Fi. The building is open 24/7 and can be accessed by a PIN.

Just outside of the service building is a new fire pit with chairs.

Fort A.P. Hill Director of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation Scott Meredith said he was elated the project was completed and the RV Park open for business.

This has been two and one half years in the making, from selling the project to getting it done, DPW (Directorate of Public Works) pushed it, Meredith said. It wouldn't have happened without the support of (DPW Director) Ben McBride and his staff.

Meredith said the renovation was long overdue.

"It was installed by the Boy Scouts as a temporary area for their campers," he said. "Now with a renovated RV Center, new showers, electric, water and sewer hook-ups everything makes more sense," Meredith said.

The Boy Scouts of America held summer jamborees for years at Fort A.P. Hill, the last one was in the summer of 2010.

Fort A.P. Hill commander Lt. Col. Michael E. Gates said despite several bad weather events that slowed the renovations, the effort persisted and resulted in the new campground.

"It's safer and more comfortable, it's a top-notch facility just like everything else we provide to our customers," Gates said. "It's a place where they can enjoy the splendor of one of the most-beautiful places in the Commonwealth of Virginia."

Campsites are available for $35 per night, $630 per month. The tent camping area nearby is open as well, sites cost $5 per night. Patrons must bring their own tents.

RVs are available to rent for $80 per night and $1260 per month. They include water, sewer and electricity plus propane. Campers who rent one must bring their own linens and food.
