Soldiers are often quietly awarded for their actions, but not U.S. Army Warrant Officer Joseph Pina, 504th Quartermaster Company, 1st Armor Division Sustainment Brigade, who is forward deployed with the U.S. Army Reserve's 300th Sustainment Brigade. On March 12, 2019, the U.S. Army Petroleum Center (USAPC) Award for Petroleum Excellence announced Pina as the recipient of the Outstanding Army Petroleum Staff Operator of the Year.

"To be honest I was very humbled by it and it speaks volume on what our team was able to accomplish during this deployment," said Pina when asked about how he felt about winning the award. "It validates the systems we put in place, and I would not be able to do my job without the team around me and would love to take this team on any combat operation deployment around the world."

The purpose of the USAPC award program is to enhance petroleum readiness and staff operations effectiveness through identifying and recognizing excellence in petroleum management and fuel handling to support the warfighter in armistice and contingency operations. The USAPC Awards Program is open to Active Army, Army National Guard, and Army Reserve modified table of organization and equipment (MTOE) units and table of distribution allowance (TDA) activities. The program recognizes Total Army units and staffs that exhibit excellence in petroleum operations.

"It validates the hard work, time and effort we put into the site. The late nights, research, and working 72 hours straight to accomplish the mission." said Pina. "I'm glad we are recognized for the hard work and I am very thankful for the opportunity that was given to me."

He also recognizes those who support him.

"I would like to thank Capt. De La Cruz and Chief Warrant Officer 2 Manuele, 300th Sustainment Brigade, for their support during these nine months. Lt. Col. Sumrall and Chief Warrant Officer 3 Bowman, from the 184th Sustainment Command. The Sub-Area Petroleum Office Team and 590th, Lt. Col. Moore, Maj. Bird, Sgt. 1st Class Viljoen and Sgt. Pavon. And a special thank to Capt. Padilla and 1st Sgt. McBean for the mentorship during the deployment."
