Huntington District Selects New Deputy Operations Chief

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Huntington District announced that Dale Smith of Middlebourne, W.Va. has been selected as the district's new Deputy Operations Chief.

Smith began his career with the Corps in September 1995 in the district's Design Branch, Electrical and Mechanical Section. In 1998, he moved to the Operations Division and worked as an Assistant Operations Manager for the Navigation Area Office. In 2007, he was selected as Chief of the Maintenance Section where he worked until 2011.

He then worked as the lake Resource Manager at East Lynn Lake from 2013 through 2016 when he was selected as the district's Natural Resources and Recreation Chief.

Smith has also been recognized for his work oversees in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

The Huntington District is the largest Civil Works District in USACE and is responsible for the operation and maintenance of 35 multipurpose flood control and 9 locks and dam projects; ensuring the navigability of 411 miles on the Ohio, Kanawha, Elk and Big Sandy Rivers and navigation, development and implementation management plans for project lands and waters to ensure compliance with all authorized project purposes. Operations Divisions is the boots on the ground when it comes to the executing the Corps mission.

The Operations Division consists of half the District's 1000 person workforce and is responsible for the mission execution of navigation, flood risk management, recreation, environmental stewardship, environmental sustainability and water supply across 45,000 square miles with a budget of more than $97 million.
