AUGUSTA, Georgia -- A U.S. Army Cyber Command (ARCYBER) partnership with the Defense Digital Service (DDS) at the Georgia Cyber Center launched with a day of speakers, panels and networking here Oct. 25.
The partnership in Georgia is based on an existing relationship currently operating out of the Pentagon. The program teams DDS tech experts with cyber Soldiers to rapidly produce much-needed capabilities in unclassified, collaborative, startup-like spaces using technology and tools found in the private sector.
Lt. Gen. Stephen Fogarty, ARCYBER commander, focused his comments at the event on the needs for innovative people and partnering with industry and academia.
"In order to accomplish the mission, we're going to have to have the best and brightest minds. We've got some great minds in uniform, but what I need is the rest of you, too," he said. "I'm not looking for degrees. I'm not looking for certificates. I'm looking for capability. I'm looking for motivation and desire to solve problems."
Chris Lynch, DDS director, echoed the need to get the right people into Army cyber positions. "Recruiting, supporting and retaining technical talent in the military can present unique challenges from training, to compensation, to ensuring opportunities for growth and engagement in a quickly evolving field," he said. "Through this partnership, we are setting our best technical warfighters against our toughest problems with support and training from our DDS software engineers and experts."
With the pending relocation of the ARCYBER headquarters to nearby Fort Gordon, the installation -- and the Augusta area -- will be the hub of the Army cyber community. The U.S. Army Cyber Center of Excellence and Cyber School, the Army Cyber Protection Brigade and a variety of other Army and government cyber and intelligence agencies have already provided the foundation for that move and focus as the Army's cyber center of gravity.
