SGT Jason Hall, from Olympia, WA, assigned to Alpha, 1-161 Infantry Battalion, as OPFOR during OCS Phase III, readies the XM-2A (120+ Decibels) Small Arms Simulator at Leschi Town on Joint Base Lewis-McChord, July 30, 2018. "We are going to have fun with the officer candidates down below," Hall said.

Flash from a propane and oxygen mixture ensures realistic live-fire effects. He simulates an attack whenever the candidates are spotted standing in one place for too long.

"If they don't move, then they get another one," Hall said.
