Remember safe practices during holiday, time away from work

By Col. Joel Warhurst, ANAD CommanderJune 28, 2018

ANNISTON ARMY DEPOT, Ala. -- The Fourth of July is fast approaching.

Founded July 4, 1776, with the signing of the Declaration of Independence, America will celebrate its 242nd birthday in just a few days.

It's a time when most people gather with family and friends and enjoy food, fun and fellowship.

Here at the depot, we will hit the pause button and focus on preventive maintenance of heavy equipment and our facilities.

From servicing our industrial-sized machinery and equipment to painting and striping the streets, it is an effort that must be accomplished to maintain a state of readiness.

When you think about the volume of combat vehicles, small arms weaponry and artillery we repair and manufacture, we must keep our equipment and facilities in a safe operating condition.

This can only be accomplished with the least amount of workers on the shop floor.

With this time off, continue to keep safety in mind.

Whether your plans are to grill out, attend fireworks, take to the water or simply rest and relax, use caution.

Don't forget the risks that may be mixed in with fun.

Remember to inspect the grill before firing it up, supervise children when near or using fireworks, wear life vests when boating, buckle up when in automobiles, obey the speed limit, don't be distracted by electronic devices and don't drink and drive.

These simple acts could save a life.

The work you perform on a daily basis is at the core of our support to the war fighter.

Your knowledge, skills and abilities are critical to our mission. Together, we remain committed to providing men and women in uniform with only the best equipment.

So, as you relax during this time off, while celebrating our freedoms and independence, let us remember that freedom isn't free.

It was bought with a very high price.

We must not take it for granted.

From the Warhurst family to yours, we wish you the best for a happy and safe Fourth of July. We'll see you on the ninth.
