Her Excellency Ursula von der Leyen, Minister of Defense for the Federal Republic of Germany, participated in an Armed Forces Full Honor Wreath-Laying Ceremony with Maj. Gen. Michael L. Howard, commanding general, Joint Force Headquarters-National Capital Region and the U.S. Army Military District of Washington, at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Arlington National Cemetery, June 20, 2018.
In addition to laying a wreath, Leyen met with Secretary of Defense James Mattis at the Pentagon. According to news reports she is scheduled to meet with the Secretary of State and the National Security Advisor during her trip as well.
Germany and the United States are both members of the United Nations and of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
