FORT RILEY, Kan. - April 24, community members gathered for the dedication of the Kansas Veterans' Cemetery located on Wildcat Creek Road in Manhattan.

Due to the Federal Munitions Board Policy of 1950, Fort Riley cannot expand the boundaries of its post cemetery, which has reached capacity. The new cemetery will be a place for veterans who wish to be buried alongside their fellow servicemembers.

The 90 acres will accommodate full-casket ceremonies, cremations, both in-ground burials and columbarium niches, and a scattering garden.

Four helicopters flew over the site before remarks were made.

Fort Riley Garrison Commander Col. Richard Piscal, Rep. Jerry Moran and Rep. Lynn Jenkins, were among those who spoke.

Following the playing of taps by Sgt. Andrew Spinazzola, 1st Infantry Division Band, the colors were retired and everyone was invited to have snacks and refreshments at the administration building.

Terri Sutton, a member of the Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 28 in Manhattan, said she thinks the opening of the Kansas Veterans' Cemetery is great and will be more feasible for people.

"I think this is awesome, I have been looking forward to it," Sutton said. "I have been pre-approved, so that is awesome. It's beautiful out here; I was really impressed with it."
