A graduate of Draughon Business College in Shreveport, La., Sgt. 1st Class Sheila A. Horton has more than 20 years of military service as a motor transport operator and currently serves with the 1st Maneuver Enhancement Brigade and Task Force Warrior as the transportation motor pool NCOIC on Bagram Air Field in Afghanistan.

"Sergeant Horton stepped into a position where there had previously been no military oversight," said Master Sgt. Dudley R. Walden of TF Warrior Base Operations, explaining how she established systems to ensure promptness of maintenance and services.

"The operational rate of nearly 400 vehicles has dramatically improved since Sergeant Horton took over the motor pool in September, and in the long run, that saves a lot of money," said Sgt. Maj. David Stewart, base operations sergeant major.

Horton supervises more than 20 civilian contractors and manages the motor pool with passion. "She is fair and impartial, holding everyone to the same standard, and will not waiver one bit," said Stewart.

A native of Pleasant Hill, La., Horton looks forward to redeploying this summer back to Fort Polk and to her home and family in Leesville. Her civilian husband, Ronald, works with installation property on Fort Polk, and son DeMarcus, 18, studies engineering at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, La.

"The house and land that my husband and I purchased will be almost paid for by the time I retire," said Horton, who is eager to return home to Louisiana and reintegrate into Family activities.

When asked about retirement, Horton said, "I'm looking forward to taking care of my Rottweiler, Pok, German Shepherd, Sasha, and two poodles, Pooky and Diamond."
