The U.S. Coast Guard took delivery of its first robots to bolster the capability of its National Strike Force May 8 in a ceremony held at the U.S. Army's Program Executive Office for Combat Support & Combat Service Support (PEO CS&CSS.) The National Strike Force provides highly trained, experienced personnel and specialized equipment to Coast Guard and other federal agencies to facilitate preparedness and for response to oil and hazardous substance pollution to protect public health and the environment. The NSF covers all Coast Guard Districts and Federal Response Regions. PEO CS&CSS, headquartered at the Detroit Arsenal, Warren, Mich., manages robotics programs of record. The Coast Guard now joins the Army, the U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Navy, and U.S. Air Force, all of which have fielded similar robots. These systems can search and interrogate threats in austere, rugged, and urban environments -- providing Strike Force Teams with a significantly enhanced stand-off capability, which increases safety and can save lives.
