FORT LEAVENWORTH, Kan. -- Lt. Gen. Michael Lundy, Commander of the Combined Arms Center and Fort Leavenworth and Commandant of the Command and General Staff College, recognized 33 faculty members with 43 writing awards for their published scholarly works during a ceremony at the Lewis and Clark Center, April 2.
Congratulating the award recipients, Brig. Gen. Scott Efflandt, provost of the Army University and deputy commandant of CGSC, said their efforts "demonstrated three areas we want our students emulate -- technical competence, critical thinking, and the ability to communicate." Professional writing is the "benchmark of the health of our profession," he said.
The Golden Pen Awards recognize faculty members for professional writing. The program is run by volunteers from the CGSC faculty who staff three committees that recognize authors in three categories. The Gold Pen is awarded for books or book length works. Silver is awarded for a chapter of a book, a journal article, or a stand-alone monograph that is not part of a degree program. The Bronze Pen is given for a short article, undocumented article, encyclopedia article, book review, op-ed piece or letter to the editor, or a body of work consisting of no more than five publications.
Dr. John Kuehn and Dr. Sean N. Kalic, both of the Department of Military History, received recognition in all three categories at this event. Four other faculty members received awards in two categories.
