Fort Detrick's Spc. Jason Misla Fontanez has been selected by All Army Sports to participate in the 2018 Army Trial Camp for Volleyball. The trial camp is scheduled for April 13 through May 6 at Fort Indiantown Gap, Pennsylvania. If selected to the Army Volleyball Team, he will go on to compete with the Army team against other military services in the Armed Forces Volleyball Tournament held in Florida, May 7-13, at the Air Force's Hurlburt Field.
Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Fontanez never played volleyball before his senior year of high school. The strong encouragement and forcefulness of his older brother, who was also the coach of his high school team, is how he began. His apparent natural skills at the game earned him a scholarship to the University of Puerto Rico at Cayey, where he played at the Division II level for four years.
After college, Fontanez entered the Army in 2013. While stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas, in 2017, he applied for and was invited to the Army Trial Camp for Volleyball. He made the team and, in doing so, helped lead the Army team to a second place finish in the Armed Forces Volleyball Tournament.
Fontanez currently participates in the Fort Detrick Competitive Division of the Intramural Volleyball League and is an active participant at the Volleyball House in Elkridge, Maryland, just outside of Baltimore.
Fontanez is assigned to Alpha Company, 53rd Signal Battalion and has been stationed at Fort Detrick since 2017.
