ROCK ISLAND ARSENAL, Ill. -- Students from Pleasant Valley High School, Bettendorf, Iowa, participated in a job shadowing opportunity hosted by the U.S. Army Sustainment Command here, March 2.

Hayden Guenzler and Gavin Smith, both juniors interested in business, logistics and supply management, shadowed Richard Troendle, deputy director, Distribution Management Center, and William Vertrees, director, Logistics Readiness Center-RIA, respectively, during a four-hour site visit to the LRC.

The job shadowing opportunity allows RIA personnel to share the important role they play in Army readiness and provides students with first-hand experience in prospective career fields.

"Job shadowing allows management to inform and educate the local community on what ASC has to offer, and broaden the students' career field knowledge," said Emma Matthews, human resource specialist, ASC.

"Seeing everything on the job, in person, was something that a classroom or even a guest speaker can't educate you about. I believe job shadows in offices and workplaces help us really find out what we want to do with our future," Guenzler said.

"I believe [the job shadowing program] provided the students with an opportunity to learn about the basic perspectives of logistics by showcasing the capabilities of LRC-RIA," Vertrees said.

"This is a great program and I look forward to our next opportunity."

All participants expressed great satisfaction with the job shadowing opportunity and believe it should continue.

"After visiting I now have a stronger interest in the logistics-side of business. I would highly recommend for other students this type of job shadow," Smith said.

This was the first year of the program, and is a result of PVHS reaching out to ASC.
