ROCK ISLAND ARSENAL, Ill. -- The U.S. Army Sustainment Command Public Affairs Office collected four first-place finishes in the 2017 U.S. Army Materiel Command David G. Harris Public Affairs Competition.

The command's electronic publication, the Global eLine, was named "Best in AMC" in the Online Publication (Unit Category). The editor of the publication is Michael Bassett. Staff members include Jon Connor, Kevin Fleming, Linda Lambiotte, Paul Levesque and Galen Putnam.

Connor, a public affairs specialist with the ASC PAO, garnered three individual first-place finishes in photography by topping the field in the News Photo, Feature Photo and Picture Story categories from his work in ASC's Best Warrior Competition held at Fort McCoy, Wisconsin last May.

Connor also received an honorable mention in the Photojournalism category for his writing and photography in the story "LRC-Irwin keeps National Training Center ready for premier training in Mojave Desert."

At this level of judging, ASC competed against its sister major subordinate commands falling under AMC, a four-star command. There are no second or third place recipients in this competition -- just first-place and honorable mention placements.

Winning entries will be forwarded to compete in the Department of the Army-level Maj. Gen. Keith L. Ware Public Affairs Communications Competition.

The KLW Competition recognizes Soldiers and Department of the Army civilian employees for excellence in furthering the objectives of the Department of the Army Public Affairs program. The Secretary of the Army sponsors the competition annually.

The Office of the Chief of Public Affairs at the Pentagon conducts judging with a goal of ensuring the best internal information efforts receive recognition for professional excellence and outstanding achievement.

The award is named in honor of Ware, who was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1945 and served as the deputy chief and chief of information for the Army, now the Office of the Chief of Public Affairs, from September 1964 through November 1967.

Ware was killed in 1968 when the helicopter he was riding in was shot down in Vietnam.

Many buildings and locations are named in honor of him to include the Keith L. Ware Simulation Center located at RIA that provides its users unique, valuable, and economical armament system test capability. The center contains large physical simulators mounted in an indoor firing range.
