FORT HOOD, Texas - Fellow "Greywolf" Soldiers of 3rd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division and family members gathered at Pvt. Samuel Moody's memorial service April 8, at Ironhorse Chapel on Fort Hood, Texas, to pay their respects.
Moody, of Orange, Texas, was a cavalry scout assigned to the Rear Detachment of 6th Squadron, 9th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd HBCT, 1st Cav. Div. He was 28 years old when he died March 21.
Maj. Dominique Dionne, 3rd HBCT Rear Detachment's commander, said Moody had been eagerly completing all the required preparations so he could deploy to join his regiment in Iraq who were already conducting combat operations.
"Private Samuel Moody was a great American and already displayed his outstanding leadership traits that would have helped him become an outstanding battle-tested Soldier and possibly and possibly a future, noncommissioned officer in the United States Army," Doinne told the attendants.
He told Moody's family that Samuel would not be forgotten by his fellow Soldiers and that "once a Greywolf, always a Greywolf."
Capt. Richard Floer, 6th Sqdn., 9th Cav. Regt.'s Rear Detachment commander, said it was a "shame" that Samuel did not have the chance to live up to his full potential as a scout. "I am sure he would have stood tall in the saddle and fulfilled his duties faithfully," Floer said. "It is a sad loss to our squadron to not have the opportunity to have lead this fine man."
Pvt. Stephon Smith, who was with Samuel throughout their One-Station, Unit Training in Fort Knox, Ky., and in the same unit at Fort Hood, Texas, recounted his time throughout their training together as one of selflessness and motivation on Samuel's part.
"Sam was kind, outgoing and a gentleman," Smith said about his friend. "He put others first in front of himself - he insisted on helping others."
When Smith addressed Samuel's family, he told them that he would always talk about his love for them and how he would tell stories about spending time with them growing up.
"He said some of the best times he's had was just them tow going out to the lake and boating, fishing and just spending quality time together."
Samuel is survived by his father, Ronnie Moody, and his sisters, Alyson and Ashley.
