In the Army, the phrase, ' Where the Rubber meets the Road, ' takes on additional meaning, with the Aviation and Missile Command's Logistics Support contract.
Specifically, the former Dunlop tire manufacturing facility has been transformed into a state-of-the-art Army aviation customer requirements-meeting location. The refurbished facility offers the potential of 1.1 million square feet of space available to support the Army's needs, proving that ' Readiness is a Team Sport.'
Wednesday the Alabama Governor visited the AMCOM-managed location for a first-hand look at the facility and the work being accomplished that is critical to the fight in Afghanistan.
The focal point of Governor Kay Ivey's tour featured the refurbishment process on Afghan Air Force UH-60A helicopters, a key contract feature for the Logistics Support Facility Management Activity that is managed by AMCOM's John Caraway.
While speaking to the workforce, Ivey thanked the government and contractor team for the hard work they do to support the Soldier and our coalition partners stating that seeing this 'makes me proud to be an Alabamian.'
"This is our seventh listening and learning tour around the state," Gov. Kay Ivey said. "We want to know what real people are thinking about and the challenges that they are facing. I'm here to listen, learn and be better prepared to help our state go forward."
As part of the LSF mission, the workforce performs refurbishment and will go to Afghanistan, executing training and maintenance services for the Afghan Air Force's fleet of UH-60A Black Hawk helicopters.
"The LSF provides programmatic, systems engineering and contractual subject matter expertise to support a broad spectrum of modifications, non-recurring engineering, production, repair and associated logistics functions for present and former US Army aircraft systems to all aviation customers, including Foreign Military Sales and other Government Agencies," Caraway said. "The LSF, as a government/industry partnership, also provides customers rapid response support, facilitated by a competitive contract ordering vehicle with high quality Original Equipment Manufacturer like capabilities."
Fiscal 2017 Afghanistan Security Forces requirements include procuring 53 UH-60A helicopters from U.S. Army stocks to begin replacing the Afghan Air Force's aging, Russian-made Mi-17 rotorcraft, Defense Department spokesman Adam Stump said.
The Afghan Air Force will also need to expand the number of its pilots and crews to operate the growing Black Hawk fleet in the coming years, according to Stump, who said DOD advisers are working closely with the Afghan Ministry of Defense on the issue.
"The growth in the fleet is necessary because the demand by Afghan forces for aviation support has grown rapidly as the Afghans have taken full responsibility for security," Stump said. Under AMCOM oversight, the period of performance for SES's maintenance and training work order lasts through Dec. 31, 2018.
During a Feb. 9 Senate Armed Services Committee hearing, Army Gen. John Nicholson, commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, said "the Afghan Air Force is . . . rapidly gaining capability." He said the Afghan UH-60s will be critical to regaining territory from the Taliban.
The LSF supports the Program Executive Officers for Aviation, Soldier, IEWS, as well as the Air Force, Navy, Coast Guard, FBI, Border Patrol and State Department.
"We provide direct support to the field -- to achieve Army priorities - with significant schedule and cost savings while maintaining the highest quality standards," Caraway said.
