ALEXANDRIA, Va. - Sometimes, Soldiers are called upon to help their comrades in transition while going through a transition of their own.
That was the case for Sgt. 1st Class David Johnson, hand selected by Joint Base San Antonio Warrior Transition Battalion Command Sgt. Maj. Michael Garza to work in the operations section of the WTB because of his "professionalism, dedication and resiliency to return to duty."
According to the WTB leadership, while managing his own Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Johnson was called upon several times to perform the duties of the Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge of the operations section due to staffing shortages before becoming the NCOIC. He assists the battalion's operations officer with the development of operational plans and training, as well as coordinates activities and operations with the staff to include the Battalion Surgeon, Senior Nurse Case Managers, Public Affairs Officer and WTB activities with non-profit organizations. Johnson also took on the duties of planning and executing Staff Assistance Visits, Organizational Inspection Programs and visits of numerous distinguished visitors.
In his role as operations NCOIC, Johnson began mentoring other Soldiers in transition, reminding them that they are still Soldiers and need to continue to uphold the Army Values. He also provides constant feedback to cadre and staff, ensuring that if someone stumbles in their transition, he is there to assist and provide guidance.
According to WTU leaders who have worked closely with him, "Johnson greatly contributes to the broader mission of our organization. He is a true asset to any organization that he works with."
