LTC Shelden, a native of Greenville, Michigan, received his commission as an Ordnance Officer from the University of Michigan ROTC program in 1999. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. He has served in a variety of command and staff positions in support of Light Airborne, Mechanized, and Aviation forces. His operational deployments include Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) 2004-2005 as a Brigade Maintenance Officer and Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) 2007-2008 as a Company Commander.
