Countdown to 75: US Army Europe celebrates 75 years of Strong Europe

By U.S. Army EuropeMay 31, 2017

This year we celebrate not only the 242nd birthday of our Army, but the 75th birthday of U.S. Army Europe.

An institution older than our nation itself, the U.S. Army was established on June 14, 1775 as the Continental Army.

Then, 167 years later, the War Department officially created the European Theater of Operations, U.S. Army, or ETOUSA, on June 8, 1942. The command was headquartered in London with 4,000 Soldiers.

At its peak during WWII, U.S. Army Europe had more than 1.9 million personnel in theater and was commanded by Maj. Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Today, U.S. Army Europe's headquarters is in Wiesbaden, Germany, with approximately 30,000 personnel spread across 51 countries.

From the Cold War and Desert Storm to the Balkans and Operation Iraqi Freedom -- U.S. Army Europe has been essential in maintaining the security of not only America, but our allies and partners as well.

We'll be highlighting U.S. Army Europe's history over the next week as we countdown to our 75th birthday. Follow along with #75Strong!
