Fort A.P. Hill was awarded the 2017 Governor's Environmental Excellence Gold Award for land conservation. The Governor's Environmental Excellence Awards recognize significant contributions of environmental and conservation leaders in Virginia. The Fort A.P. Hill Army Compatible Use Buffer Partnership works collaboratively to cost-share the acquisition of conservation easements or fee simple ownership from willing landowners. This partnership permanently protects high-value habitats and ecological resources, the historic and rural character of the neighboring landscape, while sustaining Fort A.P. Hill's military operational readiness by preempting encroachment from incompatible residential development.
