HINESVILLE, Ga. -- On December 7, 1941 at 7:48 a.m., Japan's bomber airplanes attacked Pearl Harbor. In 90 minutes, more than 2,300 Soldiers died and 1,200 men and women were injured. Eighteen ships were destroyed or severely damaged during the attack.
To pay homage to service members who lost their lives during this attack, Soldiers of 703rd Brigade Support Battalion, 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division joined veterans at the American Legion in Hinesville, Georgia, Dec. 3 for a 75th Pearl Harbor Remembrance Ceremony.
The Disabled American Veterans (DAV) association Chapter 46 hosted the annual remembrance ceremony. This year's theme was honoring the past generation and inspiring future generations.
"The unwavering heroism of the men and women who survived and died on this infamous day only fueled the spirit of the Americans who would mount a never before seen war effort that would lead to the unconditional surrenders in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters of war," said Lt. Col. Joshua LaMotte, commander of 703rd BSB, and guest speaker for the event.
According to the Pearl Harbor Survival Association, there are only 2,500 - 3,000 survivors living today.
"It's difficult to believe there are so few Americans alive who remember the attack 75 years ago, and the course it set for our nation," said LaMotte.
"On this day, we honor the wartime legacy of the World War II veterans," said LaMotte. "Both you and I, DAV, and the Department of Veterans Affairs care for them today and honor their value and commitment to our nation."
