The Fort Knox Education Center held its first-ever graduation ceremony at Waybur Theater Nov. 17 celebrating 74 graduates from 19 different colleges who finished or will finish degrees this year.
Graduates in cap and gown included military members, civilians, contractors and Family members who were enrolled in colleges offered through the Fort Knox Education Center. Sally Ingle, education counselor for the
Fort Knox Education Center, said it was the perfect time to hold a celebration.
"I've been here at the Fort Knox Education Center for 21 years and in all that time, we've never held a graduation ceremony," Ingle said. "The reason we picked this time is to coincide with National Education Week so this seemed like the perfect time to start."
Schools with on-post offices included Central Texas College, University of Louisville, Western Kentucky University, Elizabethtown Community and Technical College and Sullivan University and they had leadership on stage during the ceremony.
The guest speaker was U.S. Army Cadet Command and Fort Knox Commanding General Maj. Gen. Chris Hughes. He asked all the children of graduates to stand up to a round of applause and then sit back down before he addressed their parents.
"What you're doing today is incredible, and you know it," Hughes said. "But the impact that you're having just stood up and sat down."
Ingle said they plan to make this an annual celebration.
"It's really been a collaborative effort among all of Fort Knox, the garrison and everybody coming together to make this a really great event," she said.
