The 10th annual United States Army Garrison Daegu Military Retiree Appreciation Day was held 12 November at the Evergreen Community Club on Camp Walker. Many organizations such as veteran agencies and Korean medical organization attended this grand event to offer information to Military Retirees and their family members. The main event took place in the Evergreen Community Club and dental services such as free exams and cleanings were provided at the Bodine Dental Clinic.
The event began with the posting of the Colors, and the singing of the Korean and American National Anthems. USAG commander Ted Stephens, welcomed and gave opening remarks for all attendees.
"This is the second time I participate in this special day. I welcome you all to the Retiree Appreciation Day" said Stephens. "We scheduled this on Veterans Day to bring more highlight and more emphasis on the Military Retirees who have served not only for our country but they also continuously serve here for Area IV, too."
Organizations set up information tables and provided brochures, promotion items, discount coupons and give-a-way items for attendees.
"First of all, I am happy to attend this event and to honor Military Retirees. I played a role in contacting each hospital and arranged what kind of service they will offer" said Jeon, Ji-hye, Directorate of Human Resources intern, who helped to organize this grand event. "Also, the response from hospital officials was really more positive than I expected. Therefore, I wish that more hospitals will participate in this kind of event. While organizing this event, I learned that a lot of things like how important communication is. It was good opportunity to learn and volunteer."
The 168th Medical Battalion provided influenza immunizations at the medical clinic and the Optometry Clinic gave vision screenings and information brochures.
This was a well-executed event and gave me the chance to meet some of the outstanding active duty Soldiers and civilians currently serving this great country of ours", said Hlib Hayuk, retired colonel. "It's heartening to see that my service was appreciated, too."
Attending organizations provided information about the services they offer. Some performed various medical treatments and tests including blood sugar tests, blood pressure checks and acupuncture.
A luncheon was provided for the retirees and family members who attended. There was a cake cutting and USAG Daegu provided a gift and token of appreciation for all retirees. The event finished with closing comments and retiring the colors.
