COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado -- The guidon of 8th Space Company, 1st Space Battalion, 1st Space Brigade, U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command/Army Forces Strategic Command, was unfurled for the first time during an activation ceremony Oct. 16 here.

Lt. Col. Bryan Shrank, 1st Space Battalion commander, passed the guidon to Maj. John "Jack" Bierce entrusting him to care for and lead the unit as its first company commander.

Bierce then passed the guidon to Sgt. 1st Class Wade Parker where he formally assumed responsibility as the company first sergeant.

"This is a historic moment that highlights the growth of space in the Army," Shrank said. "We knew over a year ago who the command team needed to be for this organization. There was no question Maj. Jack Bierce and 1st Sgt. Wade Parker are the absolute right team to stand up this organization, and I know they will do an amazing job."

Bierce said he was looking forward to his new assignment.

"It was an amazing and historical day. I am proud and honored to be the first company commander for the newly activate U.S. Army Reserve Space Company," said Bierce. "I couldn't be prouder of the Soldiers in our unit and look forward to our adventure together."
