FORT BENNING, Ga., (June 29, 2016) -- Two hundred and forty years ago our founding leaders gathered in Philadelphia to declare that America would no longer submit to rule without representation. Knowing full well this act would start a war, the Founders declared the 13 colonies a free nation; prepared to fight for the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
It is in the defense of these same ideals that our Army has fought since July 4th, 1776. For nearly two and a half centuries American service members and their Families have sacrificed to protect our way of life. It is their legacy of courage and commitment that we are charged to sustain.
As we observe Independence Day 2016, I ask that you pause to remember the generations of dedicated service men and women who have risked their lives to protect all that we hold dear. Let their legacy inspire us to be the best we can in our service to the Nation.
Finally, the accomplishments of Fort Benning, as well as those of the Army, are made possible by our team of Soldiers, Civilians and Families. Therefore, I urge you all to safely enjoy the holiday. We must all return from the weekend able and ready to carry out our duties in defense of our great Nation.
One Force, One Fight!
