WIESBADEN, Germany -- Lt. Gen. Ben Hodges, commanding general of U.S. Army Europe, welcomed three new generals in a traditional 'patch' ceremony, June 2, here.

Approximately 50 of the headquarters' key leaders gathered to watch as old unit patches were removed and replaced with historic U.S. Army Europe patches, which display a shield engraved with a rainbow above a flaming sword.

Hodges insisted the new generals would play a critical role and be an important part of making "30,000 look and feel like 300,000."

Maj. Gen. John Gronksi assumed the position of U.S. Army Europe's deputy commanding general for Army National Guard.

Brig. Gen. Timothy Daugherty assumed the position of deputy chief of staff, G-3.

Additionally, the ceremony coincided as a welcome and promotion ceremony for Brig. Gen. Timothy McGuire who was promoted to Maj. Gen. and assumed the role of U.S. Army Europe's deputy commanding general.

During his promotion speech McGuire thanked his wife and two children, who were present, and explained that his success would not be possible without their support.

The ceremony concluded as Hodges invited attendees to congratulate the headquarters' newest senior leaders.
