FORT BRAGG, N.C. -- A change of responsibility was held at Womack Army Medical Center, May 13, to transfer responsibility from Command Sgt. Maj. Carlos Gomez to Command Sgt. Maj. Michael Stoddard.
Stoddard is coming to WAMC from the 325th Brigade Support Battalion at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. This is his first assignment to Bragg.
"This is truly a humbling and honored position for me to be accepting today. Womack comes with a great reputation for supporting Soldiers," said Stoddard. "Nothing short of fantastic work since I've been here. I look forward to serving. I look forward to being here. I look forward to working with this incredible professional team. One Team -- Quality Care- Quality Caring."
Gomez served from April 17, 2014- May 13, 2016, but will not move far from WAMC. He has been assigned as the 18th Airborne Corps Surgeon sgt. maj. He shared his experience with attendees about serving here at WAMC.
"The past 24 months have been nothing short of exciting," said Gomez. "It was a joy to be surrounded by so many committed professionals devoted to such a noble cause. I would like to thank Fort Bragg leaders that supported the Womack Team, the community partners who understood and appreciated the breadth and depth of Womack's mission."
I quickly learned how committed you [the WAMC Team] were to this organization. Within the first three weeks of arriving at Womack, I attended six memorial services. Three were Soldiers in transition and three were the civilian staff members that had spent decades in and out of uniform. I was witness to a team that shared hardship, loss, and doubt. It was with some direction and outright support this organization transformed into a confident, determined, proud and cheerful team. It has been my honor to share the past 24 months with you," said Gomez.
During the ceremony a symbolic, "passing of the non-commissioned officer sword" from the outgoing sgt. maj. to the hospital commander, Col. Lance Raney, to the incoming sgt. maj., represents the change of responsibility.
"If our non-commissioned officers are the backbone of the Army, then Command Sgt. Maj. Gomez is the gigantic L5 lumbar vertebrate upon which we all have been supported," said Raney. "He is an absolute professional committed to the people who are our Army. He gives full meaning to the term 'chain of support.' [He has the] ability to use positive influence through personal example, caring discipline and people & mission first; not one or the other, but both. He has promoted excellence across all organizations here at Fort Bragg. You will be missed by your teammates here at Womack, even though you are just going across the street."
The WAMC complex state-of the art medical complex is an integral component to Fort Bragg's military mission and has been providing medical care to the Fort Bragg community since 1918 as Camp Bragg base hospital.
