DAEGU, SOUTH KOREA -- Command Sgt. Maj. Jose A. Castillo relinquished responsibility as the command sergeant major of the 19th Expeditionary Sustainment Command, Mar. 3.
Brig. Gen. John P. Sullivan, 19th ESC commanding general, hosted the relinquishment of responsibility ceremony for Castillo at Camp Walker Kelly Gym with Area IV military leaders and distinguished community members in attendance. A formation of non-commissioned officers representing all subordinate units of the 19th ESC as well as the 8th Army band were present at the ceremony to bid a formal farewell to the outgoing command sergeant major.
"From private to brigadier general, he's made us all of us better warfighters and sustainers," said Sullivan. "Without question, Team 19 is stronger and better prepared to 'fight tonight' due to CSM Castillo's engaged leadership and ability to impart his hard-won experience."
Castillo officially relinquished his responsibility as the 19th ESC Command Sergeant Major to Sgt. Maj. Toese J. Tia.
Castillo, who has served in the Army for over 20 years at various positions including the 82nd Airborne Division, joined the ranks of the 19th ESC as the senior NCO and principal advisor to the commanding general in August 2014. As a senior leader of Team 19, the ultimate logistics provider of the United States Forces Korea, Castillo worked tirelessly to build positive command climate and support Soldier development, putting strong emphasis on his motto of "be the leader that you want to be led by."
Prior to the ceremony, Castillo was presented the Legion of Merit among other distinguished awards. His wife Nanci, was also recognized for her active role in the Area IV community and volunteer activities. Castillo expressed his sincere appreciation to the leaders, Soldiers, families and friends of the 19th ESC in his final remarks.
"ROK-US alliance and Team 19 will always be the example I use for what the Army should look like," said Castillo.
Tia, previously the command sergeant major of the Material Support Command -- Korea, assumed responsibility as the command sergeant major of the 19th ESC.
Castillo's next assignment will be command sergeant major for the Army Contracting Command.
