The Fort Myer Lady Generals basketball squad took home their third consecutive win in the women's division of the annual Capital Classic Basketball Tournament at the Fort Myer Fitness Center Feb. 15.

The "three-peat" champions captured their first-place trophy when rivals Fort Knox forfeited the game. Winter weather, which included snow and ice, prevented the Fort Knox, Kentucky-based team to attend.

"We won three, so it's a 'three-peat,'" said Lady Generals Coach Sherman Sherin. "I started with nine players, but I entered the tournament with only seven players ... [I think] the ladies' desire to win was just too much."

In the men's division, the Fort Lee men's basketball squad defeated the National Capital Region Marine Corps team by a mere two points, 78-76, to win the championship.

Fort Lee edged out the Marines in a buzzer-beater after a Marine player fouled tournament MVP and all-tournament player Phillip Brown in the second half with just seconds left on the clock. Reacting to the foul, the NCR Marines' coach James "Red" Jones was penalized with a technical foul for leaving the coach's box. Fort Lee guard Terrell Moorer made two technical foul shots, putting the Kentucky team up 77-76. Brown made the first foul shot and purposely missed the second to finish the game off.

"I am jubilated and excited," said Fort Lee Coach Marvin Michaels of the close win over the Marines. "God has blessed us with a talented team, and we played a wonderful Marine team and they are tough."
