50th Anniversary of Ia Drang

By U.S. ArmyNovember 17, 2015

FORT BENNING, Ga., (Nov.18 2015) -- We recently honored this country's men and women who served this great nation on Veterans Day. The Battle of Ia Drang in Vietnam, fought Nov. 14-18, 1965, is a well-known battle that epitomized the warrior spirit, and the necessity to master the fundamentals to fight and win.

This four-day battle provided countless lessons learned by the Soldiers that served there during this engagement. This engagement served as the combat introduction of the Air Mobile Cavalry, units that were formed, trained and deployed from Fort Benning as the 1st Cavalry Division.

The Maneuver Center of Excellence will host a series of events on Nov. 23 and 24 that will enable us to learn from 10 great Veterans from this battle. They will be available to meet at a no-host social on Monday night, Nov. 23 at Jack's 19th Hole at the Fort Benning Golf Course from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

On Nov. 24 there will be two Leadership Professional Development Panel Discussions in Marshall Auditorium from 10 a.m. to noon, and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. followed by a commemoration ceremony. At 5 p.m., there will be a wreath laying ceremony at the National Infantry Museum's Vietnam Memorial Wall, followed by a Vietnam era UH-1 Huey helicopter flyover and then a dinner inside the NIM at 5:30 p.m. with the key speaker, Joe Galloway, co-author of the book, We Were Soldiers Once... and Young.

I invite you to participate and take advantage of this opportunity to listen and learn from these great Soldiers. These are lessons that cannot be taught in a classroom.
