REDSTONE ARSENAL, Alabama -- U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command/Army Forces Strategic Command welcomed a new director of Equal Employment Opportunity Office.
Mary Peoples, who previously served at USASMDC/ARSTRAT's Equal Employment manager, was selected for the role and began her new duties Oct. 4.
"As a staff level manager, I will serve as the principal adviser to SMDC's commanding general, command leadership, and all command elements on matters pertaining to EEO," Peoples said. "I will provide authoritative advice on EEO responsibilities and all matters related to EEO programs, plans, policies and decisions."
Peoples has served in EEO roles for about 35 years, with 30 of those years at SMDC.
"EEO practices embrace and expound on the Army Civilian Corps Creed that we live out every day in our work place," Peoples said. "EEO is important because it helps us establish a baseline for acceptable behavior considering the many differences in lifestyles, values, and attitudes that employees have. The Army is strengthened by the talents of its diverse civilian workforce in accomplishing our national defense mission."
In May 2015, SMDC transferred the EEO complaint processing function for its Huntsville employees to the Redstone Arsenal garrison EEO office in compliance with Army transformation initiatives.
"Provisions of the policy provide that tenant commands residing on an Army installation will receive certain common levels of service from the garrison," Peoples said. "EEO is one of those common levels of service covered. If anyone believes he or she has a complaint based on race, gender, religion, national origin, reprisal, disability, age or genetic background information, then he or she should contact the Redstone garrison EEO office for counseling and processing of informal and formal complaints."
The garrison EEO office can be reached at (256) 876-8015.
