FORT BENNING, Ga., (Sept. 30, 2015) -- The Maneuver Center of Excellence welcomed the Infantry School's newest commandant and chief of Infantry during a ceremony Sept. 28 in McGinnis-Wickam Hall's Derby Auditorium.

Brig. Gen. Peter Jones assumed command as the 56th chief of Infantry.

Maj. Gen. Scott Miller, Maneuver Center of Excellence commanding general, welcomed Jones and his Family to the community and expressed his confidence in Jones' abilities as a leader.

"We're going to take advantage of bringing Armor and Infantry together," Miller said. "We're going to make sure the maneuver force is as prepared as it must be for the world we live in today."

Miller said those who don't know Jones could take a look at some of the things he's done in his career to know that he is capable of leading the Infantry.

Jones recently served as the Director of Future Plans, International Security Assistance Force Joint Command, later Resolute Support Mission Joint Command, North Atlantic Treaty Organization, Operation Freedom's Sentinel, Afghanistan.

Jones was commissioned as an Infantry officer in the U.S. Army upon graduation from the United States Military Academy in 1985. Throughout his career, Jones has served in numerous staff and leadership positions, both in the continental United States and overseas.

"He will take over right where Brig. Gen. (James) Rainey left off," said Miller. "He embodies excellence."

Jones said Fort Benning has always been the place where the Army starts building Soldiers, leaders and formations that are smart, fast, lethal and precise. He knows with the changing complex environment, leading the Infantry will be a challenge, but said he is ready to take that challenge on.

"Fort Benning is truly a leadership lab," Jones said, from transforming a civilian to a Soldier to building officers to be platoon leaders. "Fort Benning is preparing our Soldiers for the future."

Jones' awards include: the Legion of Merit with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Bronze Star Medal for Valor, the Bronze Star Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Meritorious Service Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Army Commendation Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Army Achievement Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Expert Infantryman Badge, the Pathfinder Badge, the Parachutist Badge, the Ranger Tab, the Joint Chiefs of Staff Identification Badge and the Army Staff Badge.

Jones is married to Stephanie Jones, and they have two sons, Lincoln Edward and Christopher Thayer.
