ASHEVILLE, N.C. (Aug. 13, 2015) -- Soldiers assigned to the 105th Military Police Battalion, 130th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, North Carolina Army National Guard, or NCARNG, conducted CPR training, a combat lifesaving class and Army warrior tasks, or AWTs, training in preparation for their future deployment to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, also known as GITMO, at the National Guard armory here Aug, 1, 2015.
This will be first deployment of a NCARNG battalion to GITMO.
"The mission is command and control of the security forces down there (GITMO) that are guarding the detention facility," said Command Sgt. Maj. Jim Hummel, the 105th MP Battalion's command sergeant major. "We will be doing mission command over the forces guarding the facility and providing a safe, humane and secure area for the detainees."
The medical training was taught by instructors from the 139th Regional Training Institute, NCARNG, those who also teach medical courses throughout the year to active-duty, Reserve and National Guard Soldiers.
"I love hands-on training," said Sgt. 1st Class Melony Roach, the 105th MP Battalion's investigative noncommissioned officer. "We've been doing a lot of classroom briefings and training, now we're actually getting into the hands-on training."
Staff Sgt. Francisco Hernandez, a NCARNG's Pre-mobilization Training and Assistance Element, or PTAE, Soldier, evaluated the MP Soldiers as they completed different medical and AWTs lanes.
"This was great training! Because this is life training you can use it when you go home today or if you're at the grocery store," said Hummel. "These Soldiers can go back to their loved ones and potentially save a family member or fellow guardsmen."
This will be the battalion's third deployment since Sept. 11 in support of detention operations. Their other two deployments were in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
