JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-FORT SAM HOUSTON, Texas -- (July 22, 2015) The Mission and Installation Contracting Command's senior enlisted leader is departing the command in August following his selection for another nominative position.
Command Sgt. Maj. Stephen Bowens was recently notified of his selection by the Sergeants Major Management Office for an assignment as the Department of the Army Sexual Harassment/Assault Response and Prevention sergeant major at the Pentagon.
SHARP, which falls under the Army Deputy Chief of Staff for G-1, is responsible for eliminating incidents of sexual harassment and sexual assault. He said this is the first nominative sergeant major assigned to the position, allowing him a greater reach to the largest part of the force.
Program goals include increasing training and resources, reducing the stigma of reporting, and holding those who commit violations accountable.
"I'm eager to dedicate my efforts to this Army top priority; however, no one person can single-handedly eradicate sexual harassment and sexual assault. It's the duty of every Soldier, civilian and contractor across the service to foster a climate of trust that protects every member of the Army family," Bowens said. "From the time a Soldier or civilian employee raises his or her hand in a solemn oath to the Army, SHARP training and education has been an integral part of service. Everyone has a responsibility for ensuring its success."
Bowens joined the MICC as the command sergeant major in January 2014. Over the last 17 months, he has focused his attention on improving the career development of the contracting workforce, which must meet detailed educational and certification requirements outlined by federal statutes in order to execute government contracts. Bowens took the opportunity during site visits to many of the command's 32 offices to conduct numerous NCO professional development sessions where he advised Soldiers of the importance of meeting these standards while also fulfilling NCO leadership duties as part of the Army profession.
"The members of the MICC make up the most dedicated and professional workforce I've had the pleasure of leading," he said. "Both at home station and at forward deployed locations, they have a direct impact on an organization's readiness that allows our combatant commanders and leaders across the Army to execute their missions."
Prior to joining the command, Bowens spent the majority of his career with Army Recruiting Command where he served in a variety of positions of increasing responsibility.
